Toyota Targets Full Software-Defined Vehicle Lineup by 2030

Tokyo, Oct. 20 — Toyota Motor Corporation confirmed its plan to transform nearly all of its around 50 global models into software-defined vehicles before 2030. The new platform will support over-the-air (OTA) updates throughout the vehicle lifecycle, unlocking new functions, performance upgrades and subscription services after delivery.

Under the new strategy, Toyota will build a unified software backbone to serve roughly 10 million vehicles produced each year worldwide. The automaker expects software and service revenue to become a steady profit source, instead of relying mainly on one-time car sales.

The transition requires heavy investment in automotive software teams, electronic architecture redesign and supplier cooperation. Toyota also faces competition from EV-native brands that have already built mature OTA and subscription systems. Company leaders stated that balancing reliability, safety and flexible software iteration is the core challenge for legacy OEMs shifting toward software-defined mobility.
