Beijing, Oct. 21 — A total of 22 global automotive and tech firms have joined a unified initiative to test vehicle-road-cloud integrated autonomous driving solutions, including BYD, XPeng and Toyota. Twenty-one vehicle models are participating in mass-production-oriented road trials in designated smart city zones.
Unlike the single-vehicle intelligent route that relies heavily on onboard sensors, this architecture connects roadside perception units, cloud computing platforms and connected cars. Roadside LiDAR, cameras and communication equipment can fill blind spots for vehicles, improving safety in complex scenarios such as intersections, bad weather and crowded urban roads.
Regulators said the test results will support the formulation of unified technical standards for connected autonomous vehicles. Participants aim to reduce the hardware cost of self-driving cars while pushing forward commercial pilot services including robotaxis and unmanned logistics vehicles. Experts believe vehicle-road-cloud integration will become an important development path for autonomous driving outside pure high-level onboard autonomy.
